Panzanello's History since 1427

The Origins

Panzanello's story begins in the distant year of 1427, a year that also represents the beginning of a constant pursuit of improvement.

In 1436, Franciesco Ciucci D'Ugolino had the brilliant idea of selecting grapes upstream and reusing seeds from the best grapes to ensure the land would continue to produce increasingly better fruits.

Near Panzano in Chianti, a small village of farmers dedicated to vines and olives.

In 1964, the Panzanello property was purchased by Anna Maria Sommaruga, who decided to spend six months of the year in her country house. The current villa was transformed from a large farmhouse, composed of a stable, the farmer's family residence, and a granary.

Anna Maria Sommaruga decided to transform it to its current state to accommodate her children and grandchildren. In 1965, the work on the house and vineyards was completed. Andrea Sommaruga, her grandson, moved to Panzanello in 1994. His adventure as a winemaker began.

Andrea worked hard in the fields, learning from Luigi and his son-in-law Vasco. They taught him to understand the vine, to prune it, to tie it, to harvest, to prune and remove shoots from olive trees, to drive tractors, and everything he knows today is thanks to them.

He made his first wine bottling in 1995, and it wasn't a bad start. He began with 900 bottles, and now Panzanello produces more than 50,000 bottles each year. Panzanello was a 30-hectare estate; today it spans approximately 90 hectares.
